It was an NGO stunt involving two trucks and two very loud air raid sirens, each enclosed in a locked cage. To turn the sirens off, the police had to cut their way through each metal cage to reach the machinery and arrest the protesters.

The Chairperson of one of the Working Groups was not impressed, suggesting it was an unhelpful ploy. But because the talks are not making much progress, many would argue that an alarm bell loudly blaring is very appropriate to highlight the huge need to make positive progress. All the more urgent because here in Bonn there is just one final day of negotiations left!

Meanwhile the Global Campaign for Climate Action (GCCA) reminded the men and women in suits what these negotiations are really about: not words on a page, but peoples’ lives. At the GCCA press conference this morning, community representatives from Togo, Mexico, Germany and Australia told their stories about how climate change already has a devastating effect on people in their countries.

An interview with some of them can be found here:

We will continue to work hard to ensure our messages are heard loud and clear.

Co-authored by Simon Starling

People matter

Fri, 12 Jun 2009 08:28:41 +0000 Judith Orland 8797 at http://l.blogs.oxfam http://l.blogs.oxfam/en/blog/09-06-12-people-matter#comments Commitment needed http://l.blogs.oxfam/en/blog/09-06-10-commitment-needed

On their way to the plenary delegates at the UN climate talks here in Bonn, pass by a ragged bear holding up a sign: 'No coins, it's change I need.' It is a silent protest. If we would hold a minutes silence for each of the death caused by climate change, we would not be uttering a word for the next 180 days and even longer.

Copenhagen starts in 180 days and we cannot afford to stay silent. Commitment is called for even though at the negotiations one gets the impression that this is not everyone's goal. Take for example the issue of finance for adaptation, much talked about here at the conference with different proposals on the table.

When it comes to money, however, consensus seems particularly hard to reach. In Europe, where there has been an EU Finance Ministers meeting this week, there is a lack of political will to get on and allocate sufficient money to assist developing countries to adapt to climate change.
